EU Guarantee Notice: What Online Shops Must Do Before 27 September 2026
The Empowering Consumers Directive introduces a harmonised EU notice on the legal guarantee and a label for durability guarantees. Here's what changes for online shops.
On 27 September 2026, a new set of EU consumer-law rules starts to apply: Directive (EU) 2024/825, better known as the Empowering Consumers for the Green Transition directive. Much of the attention has gone to its ban on vague green claims. But it also changes how every online shop has to inform customers about guarantees.
Two new elements: the notice and the label
The directive amends the Consumer Rights Directive and introduces two harmonised formats, designed by the European Commission so that consumers see the same information in every member state:
- The harmonised notice on the legal guarantee of conformity — the at-least-two-year statutory guarantee that applies to goods bought from a trader in the EU.
- The harmonised label for a commercial guarantee of durability — used when a producer offers a durability guarantee of more than two years for the whole product at no extra cost.
Who has to show what?
- The notice concerns practically every shop selling goods to consumers. It replaces the many individual ways shops have described the legal guarantee until now.
- The label is only relevant for products where the producer actually offers such a durability guarantee. The information comes from the producer; you show it to the customer.
B2B-only shops are not affected, as the rules are part of consumer law.
What "prominent" means
The whole point of the harmonised formats is recognisability. The information must be easy to find for the customer before they are bound by the contract — not hidden in the general terms and conditions.
Your checklist for 27 September
- Add the harmonised notice on the legal guarantee to your shop, in the language of every market you sell to.
- Ask your suppliers which products carry a producer's commercial guarantee of durability, and for how long.
- Show the harmonised label on those products.
- Review your terms and conditions and product texts for wording about guarantees that contradicts the new notice.
- While you're at it: check your environmental claims, which the same directive restricts.
The EU Guarantee Label plugin puts the official notice and label on your product pages in every EU language — for Shopify and WooCommerce.
