How to Display EU Energy Labels in Your Shopify Store
Which products need an EU energy label online, what exactly you have to show next to the price, and how to set it up in Shopify without editing every product by hand.
If you sell TVs, fridges, washing machines, lamps or any other product that carries an EU energy label in a physical store, the same label has to appear in your online shop. This is one of the most frequently checked obligations in EU e-commerce — and in Germany, one of the most common reasons for cease-and-desist letters.
This guide explains what the rules require and how to implement them in Shopify.
Which products need an energy label?
The framework is Regulation (EU) 2017/1369. The concrete requirements come from product-specific delegated regulations, which currently cover, among others:
- Televisions and electronic displays
- Refrigerators, freezers and wine storage appliances
- Washing machines, washer-dryers and tumble dryers
- Dishwashers
- Light sources (lamps, LED modules)
- Ovens and range hoods
- Air conditioners, space heaters and water heaters
Tyres have their own label under Regulation (EU) 2020/740 with very similar online rules.
What you have to show online
For every labelled product offered at a distance, you must:
- Display the energy efficiency class and the label in the visual advertisement, close to the price.
- Make the product information sheet available — the standardised data sheet the supplier registers in EPREL.
The regulations allow a so-called nested display: instead of the full label, you can show an arrow in the colour of the efficiency class, containing the class letter and the range of classes. A click, mouse-over or tap on that arrow must open the full label.
Since March 2021, most product groups use the rescaled A–G label. Old A+++ labels you uploaded years ago are no longer correct for those products.
Where the official label comes from
Suppliers must register their models in EPREL, the European Product Registry for Energy Labelling. Each registered model has a registration number, and EPREL provides the official label image and product information sheet in all EU languages.
That makes EPREL the only source you should rely on. Labels copied from supplier PDFs or old product listings are a frequent cause of errors.
Setting it up in Shopify: the manual way
Without an app, the process for each product looks like this:
- Find the model in EPREL and note the registration number.
- Download the label image and the product information sheet in the right language.
- Upload both files to Shopify.
- Edit your theme or product description so the class arrow appears next to the price and opens the label.
- Link the product information sheet.
- Repeat when the supplier updates the entry.
This works for five products. For a catalogue of hundreds of appliances it becomes a maintenance problem — and one missing label is enough for a warning letter.
Setting it up with an app
The EU Energy Labels app for Shopify connects to EPREL directly. You assign the EPREL registration number to a product (or import numbers via CSV), and the app shows the class arrow next to the price, opens the official label on click and links the product information sheet — in the customer's language, and kept in sync with EPREL.
Checklist
- List every product in your catalogue that falls under an energy labelling regulation.
- Get the EPREL registration number for each model from your supplier.
- Show the class arrow or label next to the price on the product page.
- Link the product information sheet.
- Check listings in other channels (Google Shopping, marketplaces) too.
